Mr. Maland had Fourteen years of of experience in radio broadcasting, and was one of the pioneers in commercial development of the radio industry. A Graduate of University of Minnesota, followed by years of experience as a general merchant in a small town, and a salesman for Mc Martin Advertising Agency, he became merchandising editor of The Dakota Farmer and The Northwest Farmstead.

 

His wide range of experience in advertising, merchandising and broadcasting helped WHO radio deliver results for their advertisers and to give the listeners the type of program service that they wanted and needed.

 

J.O. Maland standing in the Radio Industry was indicated by being invited to become a member of the Board Of Directors of The National Association of Broadcasters, 1935-1938, and served on the joint Committee of Radio Research for three years, and he also became President of the Iowa Association Of Broadcasters.

 

Mr. Maland unique ability to attract advertisers served him well in making the WLS Barn Dance a.k.a The National Barn Dance and the WHO Iowa Barn Dance Frolic major radio attractions. He was very talented with making “sound” effects for use on the station.
