Holiday Inn Records

owned by Sam Phillips

The first Holiday Inn was opened in September, 1952 at 4941 Summer Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. Owner Kemmons Wilson and Sam Phillips were friends and Phillips was also an early investor in the motel chain. The two men discussed creating a record label that would feature bands that were performing in Holiday Inn lounges. Records would be sold at Holiday Inn desks and at Continental Trailway Bus Terminals which Kemmons had purchased.

Sam Phillips was named record company president and his son, Knox was a studio engineer. Sam Phillips bailed out of the venture due to what he deemed “an abundance of vice presidents”. The label soon followed the route of the dinosaur.
