THE FIRST SONGWRITER IN IOWA |
|
The year was 1846. His name was WILLIAM CLAYTON, A Mormon and he was on the great trek across Iowa. While he was camped along Locust Creek in section #33 of Walnut Township in Wayne County Iowa, He sat down under a tree and wrote the great trek hymn, “COME, COME YE SAINTS” on the morning of April 15, 1846. A marker was dedicated to his efforts on July 1, 1990. A large exhibit, complete with Ox drawn covered wagon is in on display the Wayne County Museum in Corydon, Iowa. This exhibit depicts the Mormon Trail crossing muddy southern Iowa and the writing of this great Hymn. (Credit
